a long time ago i promised myself that i'd never live in any place that didn't allow for the loud sounds of the railroad. i have this thing with trains, see.

i've kept that promise ever since, but it's funny - it's been mostly happenstance. i haven't really had a lot of sway in the choice of where i've stayed lately, nor the time to assess train yard proximity.

and yet it seems always to happen. maybe because i am a born rail-rider or maybe that lines pump through this state like big, pulsing veins. all i know is that i can hear trains and the sigh of a bus and it's summer.

that means it's time for this:

I love trains, too! I especially love riding trains in Europe. They're so fast and luxurious, and you can eat, drink, and smoke on them!

Also, when growing up, I loved the sound of distant trains rolling through the night. I had a hobo uncle who traveled round the country on freight trains, as was done in the times of the depression. Before he died, he was asked, if he could live his life over would he do anything differently. Without thinking, he said, "I'd part my hair on the other side." :)

This brings me to this, which expresses the life of my uncle: http://dictator88.livejournal.com/564824.html?mode=reply

It's funny that you posted this Lovin' Spoonful song. I absolutely love them, so much so that I had a friend write 'Shiva the Destroyer' in the same script as on The Best of the Lovin' Spoonful album for a 10" split we did with The Fireworks.

And, as this is your summer song (another coincidence), here's mine: http://dictator88.livejournal.com/565019.html?mode=reply

I love trains, too. In Portland and Seattle, I noticed they had railroads right next to the airports and decided those were perfect places for me, I'd get to see and hear planes and trains and I would be soooo happy. And rent would be cheap because no one else wants to hear those things but you and me.
